Belated Christmas Eve Entry

Claire Bear has had a busy past couple of weeks. She is now cross-crawling like a real baby, sitting intermittently and exploring her numerous toys. Her favorite toys are her wooden spoon, her stainless spoon (which she stole from Carrabas – really! I found it in her carrier hiding under her little leg after I brought her home), and her Winnie-ther-Pooh bear. She has starting “pointing” with her whole hand, most often at the dog, her best friend. She then shouts “ah-DAH!” This may mean “dog” or “Double” or “down you bad, bad dog!” We aren’t sure which. She also pants like a dog when she is happy and excited, usually flapping her little wings as she does so. Yesterday, Aunt Libby suggested that she may actually be mimicking Double, a disconcerting thought I had not yet considered.

Claire received a new baby sling from her Daddy on Tuesday. She now likes to be worn by me constantly … like a little mink! She rides on my hip and peeks out from under my left wing, observing everything around us.

Over the course of three days, Claire ate an entire jar of baby food chicken and sweet potatoes. Her favorite food is still bananas, although I limit her to two ounces per day. Otherwise, she gets constipated (TMI?). She now regularly uses the sign for “milk,” which she started doing at six months and one week old. She understands the word for “cat.” When I say it she looks straight at the doorway, trying to find the cat.

On December 23rd, Claire received her first banjo lesson from Patrick. She strummed the banjo and banged her wooden and “hot” spoons together. As a result, she is now an official member of a bluegrass band. There are several presents under the Fraser fir tree this year, many of them for Claire … but Santa has not come yet, of course. Grambee sent her a beautiful, rose-colored, silk, knitted stocking with pretty embellishments.

Sugar Plum Fairy

Here is Claire in the little winter dress John and I bought her. We took her to church after this picture was taken, and one of the members called her a sugar plum fairy. She wouldn't stop saying "dadadada!" during the service, so I took her to the parlor, where I could hear the sermon over the speaker and she could play on her blanket.

Hand-Made II

Here is Claire in the purple dress her Grambee knitted for her. Claire likes to try to tear the flowers off while she plays.

Hand-Made

Here is Claire in the pink bolero sweater her Grambee knitted for her. Claire would only tolerate the hat for a few minutes at a time. The only hat she will wear is her white "pilot cap," which ties under her chin. It is made by Hanna Andersson, the company that makes the cutest children's clothes. Claire is holding her wooden spoon. While her Aunt Libber and I were making beef brisket in Nashville at the beginning of December, Claire decided to steal the spoon we were using to stir the herbs for the dry rub. I ended up buying Claire her very own wooden spoon.

Puppy Love

Claire loves the dog. She has christened him "uh-DUH!" Double loves her back and gives her kisses when he sees her (after which I disinfect her). He is very gentle with her and keeps her company when I leave the room for short stretches. He never gets mad when she pulls on his ears or his tail. Double really is a good little dog, even though he got a bad rap when he was a hyper, destructive puppy. He is maturing into a quiet, protective, well-trained, grown-up dog.

Bottoms Up!

Claire likes to sleep on her tummy, and her doctor said it's okay now that she's a little older and less at risk for SIDS. She sleeps like her Aunt Libber did when she was little - with her little bottom up and her feet tucked under. Claire started sleeping through the night at six months old. John and I stopped going in her room to feed her when she would cry at night. Then, she started eating more during the day. Then, she was not hungry at night and would sleep straight through. Thank God!

Winnie

Claire received a Winnie-ther-Pooh for her Grandfather Joseph while visiting at the end of November. She loves her Winnie and talks to him and hugs him and chews on him. I think she thinks he is alive!

My Little

I am amazed that Claire is almost eight months old now. I love my "Little" so much, and am so proud of her. She has such a sweet, precious spirit that is all her own. She is both beautiful and comical. She makes me laugh all the time. She has made so much progress over the last couple of months, which I will be writing about tonight in the entries to follow.
